On a lazy Springtime afternoon, two young Confederate soldiers, take off on a pair of horses for a short ride.
The North Carolina Piedmont, 1864.
Along the way they discover an isolated farmhouse and decide to help themselves to a pair of chickens.
As they make their escape with the catch one is cut down by the blast of a shotgun.
The farm's owner, a young widow who only recently buried her soldier husband, has killed a thief who was stealing the few possessions she had left.
Immediately she feels devastated by what she has done.
Now the surviving soldier must decide what to do with her, and whether to avenge the death of his friend.
